When Jack ONeill began manufacturing neoprene vests to sell to local surfers in the Santa Cruz, California area in the early 1950s, his friends made fun of him because they could not see how he could support himself with such a small market. About 60 years later, O Neill has retired to a house next to Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary and supports educational initiatives for children. His company, which he founded with the assistance of his six children, is now a world leader in wetsuits, surfwear, and ski wear.
